PKCT Courses

The Willamette River provides excellent "tracks" to test one's fitness by day, boat, or against other paddlers.

Interest in some "time trial" courses - repeatable tracks with minimal variation by seasonal river stage - has encouraged us to put together some draft courses beginning near the Sellwood Riverfront Park

We've outlined three courses but are still measuring them - the GIS and Google Earth need a little field-GPS backup.  (Got a Garmin?  Shoot us an email with your racecourse track - we might use it!)

Short Course: 3.2 miles (statute):

Begin at the green buoy downstream from the floating rower's dock; paddle south beneath bridge to "dolphin" adjacent to Waverly Country Club flagpole, turn; back under the Sellwood Bridge, pass the green buoy, turn at the red buoy before Willamette Park; finish at the Sellwood Riverfront Park dock.

Upriver start, three passes by dock, ~3.2 miles.

Intermediate Course:

Start at the Sellwood Bridges east pier, paddle downriver along the west side of Ross Island; turn at the __ pier near OMSI (adjacent to submarine, Blueback); paddle south along the east side of Ross Island; end at the Sellwood Riverfront Park dock.

Downriver start, two passes by dock, ~5.8 miles (google earth)

1. 52.45 Ted Braun

Long Course (10.5 statute miles):

Start at the Sellwood Bridges east pier, paddle upriver through Lake Oswego; turn around Rock Island (either way); paddle downriver ending at the Sellwood Riverfront Park dock.

Courses begin and turn at "fixed" locations that should not change significantly over the year - though all are affected by flow, and several will be influenced by stage, we did our best to chose convenient navaids so these courses can be used as time trials to check your seasonal improvements.

They at least seemed more permanent than our dock:

[ PKCT/ORU launch ramp during some high water in 2006.  Don't think we used the dock that day. ]
